Clay.com vs Claude Code for Lead Generation and Scraping
I get this question a lot. People see me using Clay.com for enrichment and scraping, then they see me building scrapers in Claude Code, and they ask: which one should I use?
Wrong question. They solve different problems. And the real edge comes from combining them. I recorded a full live tutorial showing exactly how I do it, and this article breaks down everything I covered, plus the framework I use to decide when to use which tool.
What Clay.com actually does well (and where it falls short)
Clay is a data enrichment and outbound platform. You load a list of companies or people, and Clay lets you pull data from 100+ providers without managing separate subscriptions. Waterfall enrichment, Claygent for AI scraping, built-in integrations with CRMs and sending tools.
For most B2B enrichment tasks, Clay is the right starting point. You can find emails, enrich company data, score leads, and trigger outbound sequences all in one table.
Where Clay falls short: custom scraping. Claygent is good for simple page reads, but when you need something specific, like scraping Google Ads transparency pages or pulling structured data from Google Maps with deduplication logic, you hit limitations. The built-in scrapers work for common use cases. For anything custom, you need to build it yourself.

What Claude Code actually does well (and where it falls short)
Claude Code is an AI coding agent that runs in your terminal. You describe what you want to build in plain English, and it writes the code, creates the files, and can even deploy the project.
For scraping, Claude Code is a different animal. You can build a fully custom scraper in 30 minutes to an hour. Google Ads transparency pages, Google Maps local businesses, Meta ad libraries, job boards, anything with a public page. You describe what you need, Claude Code writes the scraper, and you deploy it as a live API.
Where Claude Code falls short: it does not have Clay's enrichment network. No waterfall enrichment, no 100+ data providers, no built-in CRM integrations. It builds tools. Clay connects them.

The comparison makes one thing clear: these tools cover different territory. Clay is the enrichment and workflow layer. Claude Code is the custom tooling layer.
Method 1: Build in Claude Code, call from Clay via HTTP API
This is what I use when Clay's built-in scrapers do not give me what I need, but I still want to run the workflow inside Clay.
Here is exactly how it works, step by step.
Step 1: Build the scraper locally with Claude Code. I open my terminal, describe what I need. For example: "Build a Google Ads scraper. Input is a domain. Output is whether they're running ads, the ad library URL, the advertiser name, active ads count." Claude Code writes the entire thing.
Step 2: Push to GitHub. Save the project in a repository. This is your library of tools. Every scraper you build is an asset you can reuse. I built my Google Ads scraper once. I will use it for years.
Step 3: Deploy to Railway as an HTTP API. Railway is a cloud platform where you host live applications. I asked Claude Code to turn the scraper into an HTTP API, deployed it, and now it runs 24/7.
Step 4: Call it from Clay using the HTTP API integration. In Clay, go to Tools, select HTTP API. Set the method to POST, paste your endpoint URL, define the input (domain) and expected output fields. Done.
Now every row in my Clay table can call my custom Google Ads scraper. The input is automatic (the domain column), and the output populates new columns: running ads or not, ad count, advertiser name.
I tested it live. A plumber not running ads? Zero results. Apple? 500+ active ads (the maximum the scraper returns).
Case Study: Isendu We replaced a large SDR team with a modern tech stack combining Clay and custom tooling. The result: 10 to 25 booked meetings per month for six months straight, before the company exited to Sendcloud. The efficiency came from automating what humans were doing manually, exactly the kind of workflow Method 1 enables.

Method 2: Build in Claude Code, push results to Clay via webhook
This is the reverse. You start from Claude Code and push results into Clay.
I use this when the scraping is complex or when Clay's built-in tools are clunky for the job. Google Maps scraping is a good example. Inside Clay, the Serper integration returns duplicates and is harder to control. In Claude Code, I can build a scraper with exact deduplication, result limits, and custom output fields.
Step 1: Create a webhook table in Clay. In Clay, click "Add," select "Webhook." Copy the webhook URL.
Step 2: Build the scraper in Claude Code. I literally typed: "Create a Google Maps scraper. Input: city, region, country, keyword. Output: address, company name, Google Maps URL, company website. Maximum 100 results. No duplicates. Use the Serper.dev API. Push all results to this webhook URL."
Claude Code built the entire project. Scraper, deduplication logic, webhook push. All of it.
Step 3: Run it. I can run it from the terminal. I can use voice commands with Whisper Flow. I said "Find plumbers in Miami, United States" and within minutes, 100 results appeared in my Clay table. Address, Maps URL, website, all populated.
Step 4: Continue enrichment in Clay. Once the leads land in Clay via webhook, I can enrich them with emails, phone numbers, company data, anything. I can even chain Method 1 here, calling my Google Ads scraper on the same leads to see which plumbers are running ads.
Case Study: IMPACT0 An Amazon marketing agency. We optimized their outbound using Clay and parallel dialer technology. The result: 150 meetings booked and 5 new retainers closed, plus $2M in qualified pipeline. The key was getting better data in faster, which is exactly what Method 2 solves.
Taking it further: build a UI. I can tell Claude Code to deploy the scraper to Railway with a dashboard. Input fields for city, keyword, max results. Now anyone on my team, even someone non-technical, can run the scraper without touching a terminal.

When to use Clay, when to use Claude Code, when to use both
Use Clay alone when:
- You need standard enrichment (emails, phone numbers, company data)
- Your data sources are already integrated (LinkedIn, Apollo, Clearbit, etc.)
- You want to build sequences and outbound workflows
- You do not need custom scraping logic
Use Claude Code alone when:
- You need a one-off scraper for a niche source
- You are building an internal tool (dashboard, app, automation)
- You want full control over deduplication, rate limits, and output format
- The data does not need to flow into Clay
Use both when:
- Clay's built-in scrapers do not cover your use case, but you still want Clay's enrichment and workflow capabilities
- You need custom data (Google Ads, Google Maps, Meta Ads) combined with standard enrichment
- You want to build repeatable systems that compound over time
The third option is where the real leverage is. Every scraper you build in Claude Code and deploy as an API becomes a permanent tool in your stack. You build it once. You use it in Clay forever.
The real edge: your GitHub is your toolkit
Here is something I think about a lot. The future of GTM engineering is not just skills. It is skills plus software.
Every scraper, every integration, every agent you build in Claude Code should go in GitHub. Private repositories are fine. 99% of mine are private.
Why? Because the Google Ads scraper I built today, I might need again in a year. One click and it is deployed. Hiring a GTM engineer in the future means hiring them plus everything they have already built. Skills plus code.
The winners will not be the ones building the shiniest objects. They will be the ones moving fastest, combining technical skills with business understanding. You need to know what brings results. You need to understand your customer's problems. You cannot talk to clients about Clay or Claude Code. You translate technology into business outcomes.

Can I use something other than Railway to deploy?
